For the dough: - 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast - 1/4 cup warm water - 1/2 cup milk - 1/4 cup sugar - 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted - 1 egg - 1/2 teaspoon salt - 3 cups all-purpose flour For the poppy seed filling: - 1 cup poppy seeds - 1/2 cup milk - 1/4 cup sugar - 1/4 cup honey - 1 teaspoon vanilla extract - 1/4 cup raisins (optional) - 1/4 cup chopped nuts (optional)
Instructions
1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, or until it becomes frothy. 2. In a medium saucepan, heat the milk until it's warm but not hot. Remove from heat and combine with the sugar, melted butter, egg, and salt in a large mixing bowl. 3. Add the yeast mixture to the milk mixture. Gradually add the flour and mix until a dough forms. 4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size. 5. While the dough is rising, prepare the filling. In a medium saucepan, combine the poppy seeds and milk. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens. Remove from heat and stir in the sugar, honey, vanilla extract, raisins, and nuts. Let it cool to room temperature. 6. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
