Baklava Preparation

1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius). 2. Prepare the phyllo dough by thoroughly buttering each sheet and layering them in a pan, usually about 10 sheets thick. 3. Sprinkle the chopped nuts evenly over the phyllo layer. Common nuts used are walnuts, pistachios, or almonds. Add a sprinkle of ground cinnamon. 4. Continue layering phyllo sheets, buttering each one, and add more nuts as desired. Aim for multiple layers until your ingredients are used up, finishing with a top layer of phyllo. 5. Cut the layered dough into diamond or square shapes before baking. This makes it easier to serve after cooking. 6. Bake in the preheated oven until the baklava is golden and crispy, about 45 minutes to 1 hour. 7. While the baklava is baking, prepare the syrup. Combine sugar, water, and honey (if using) in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and add a few drops of lemon juice and optional spices like cloves or cardamom. Simmer until it thickens slightly. 8. Once the baklava is done, immediately pour the hot syrup over the hot baklava. Let it cool completely before serving.
