- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast - 2 tablespoons warm water (110°F) - 3/4 cup warm milk (110°F) - 1/4 cup granulated sugar - 1/2 teaspoon salt - 1 egg - 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted - 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour - Oil for frying (vegetable, canola, or peanut oil) - Assorted toppings and fillings (glazes, sprinkles, chocolate, powdered sugar, etc.)

Instructions

1. Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy. 2. Prepare Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, salt, egg, melted butter, and the activated yeast mixture. Gradually add the flour and mix until a soft dough forms. 3. Knead Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours or until it doubles in size. 4. Shape Donuts: Punch down the risen dough and roll it out to about 1/2 inch thickness. Use a donut cutter or two round cutters (one large, one small) to cut out donut shapes. Place the donuts on a floured baking sheet, cover, and let them rise for another 30 minutes. 5. Fry Donuts: Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
